An electrical secret covered in The Örebro Castle (Sweden)

The Örebro Castle is a medieval castle fortification situated in the scenic region of Närke, in Sweden. The castle lies on an island by the river Svartån. The oldest part of the castle, a defense tower, was erected in the latter half of the 13th century, but its present appearance, the Örebro Castle, was constructed over the last century. Since 1935 the castle has been a national Swedish monument. Discover how DEVI electrical heating systems are being used in the conservation of old castles.

In 2012, the castle underwent a complete roof renovation. A new copper plate and new gutters were installed. To increase safety and prevent damage to the castle in the winter, as frost bursts roof gutters and brickwork, it was decided to install an electrical heating outdoor system in the Örebro Castle, to take care of the problems before they arise. The biggest challenge for the system was to provide not only security and safety in an environmentally balanced way, but also not to damage the national Swedish monument. This sensitive project was conducted in 3 stages, and was finished in 2014.

Why does an old castle need DEVI solutions?

Winter can be a dangerous, troublesome and expensive occurrence  for every house owner. Can you imagine how difficult it can be for a castle owner in Nordic Sweden?

Snow can accumulate on the castle rooftop. During a sunny winter day snow begins to melt thanks to solar heat. Melted snow trickles down and can settle along colder valleys, overhangs and inside gutters. During the frozen night, when temperatures fall below 0⁰C again, melted snow refreezes, forming dams of ice, which can damage the roof and pipes.

To avoid this kind of expensive destruction, the Örebro Castle was equipped with nearly 1000 meters of DEVIiceguard  heating cable.

What was done in the Örebro Castle?

The DEVI installation in the Örebro Castle was a huge challenge, especially for Elprofilen AB – the DEVI partner and cardinal constructor of the castle renovation. According to national monument status, highly specialised installers, Elprofilen AB, not only had to take special care of each part of their work, they also had to act in accordance with legal regulations. E.g. drilling was forbidden. The entire project was extremely sensitive and tricky. The biggest challenge was a scaffolding construction. Climbing workers were engaged in order to help.

The heating cable DEVI Iceguard, Easy Connect DEVI  and control system DEVIreg 850 with humidity and temperature sensors, were chosen for the Örebro Castle renovation. The project succeeded.
